NKG Round Table Event

Joint preparation for future challenges

At the beginning of September, representatives from several Group companies, the Board of Management and the Coaching team met for a three-day meeting near Hamburg. In intensive rounds, various topics were discussed, such as the development of our business and the coffee market as a whole. Another key topic was the cooperation between the holding company and the operating companies. We covered this topic in detail in the last issue of our magazine. Here is a brief update.

During a workshop, the current state of cooperation was discussed. What are the requirements for the management of the operating companies? How can the holding and the operating companies work together even better in the future to be prepared for upcoming challenges?

“For me, three key points emerged from the discussions,” says Maren Uzarek, Director Group HR. “The first is that we need to communicate our Group vision more clearly to all Group companies, and thus to all Group employees, and explain in practical terms the benefits of the Group structure for each member. Secondly, the issue of feedback, even though it may seem overused to some, is still absolutely relevant. Establishing a robust feedback loop is essential – from the holding company to the operating companies and vice versa. Understanding the needs, criticism and suggestions for improvement from both sides is critical for effective collaboration. This also includes the third important point, which is that expectations should be clearly stated – in both directions – facilitating a joint understanding and fostering stronger alignment among all stakeholders.”

Emilio Medina, General Manager at BECAMO and Managing Director Jan Willem Otten, Bero Coffee Singapore, have taken part in the Round Table Event. Both agree with Maren Uzarek on her points. Jan Willem Otten adds: “We need clear communication and accountability in both directions in order to be successful in the future. We all have to understand what our goals are in order to achieve them.” Emilo Medina has a specific suggestion: “We need to implement short bi-monthly video meetings to interchange information to have a clear vision”, he says.

These topics will continue to play a role in future meetings. We will keep you posted on in the upcoming issues of our INSIDE MAG.

Although Hellen did not even know what a coffee lab looked like when starting her career at NKG, she now has even more interest in coffee and also coffee farming: for the few coffee bushes her husband has (Bungoma and Turbo, Kenya), she is the expert now regarding pruning, applying fertilizer and picking the best cherries during harvesting!
