MOVING FORWARD:
REDEFINING THE FUTURE NKG NETWORK

The fact that we are in a time of development and that there are lots of changes going on has been emphasized many times in the last issues of NKG Connected. What we have not yet looked at in more detail is the question of what this means for all of us. So, in this issue, we want to ask (and answer) exactly this question: What does our group structure at NKG actually look like now, and what does this mean for the holding and the group companies?

As a decentralized group of independent companies, we are not a concern, but benefit from the fact that the group companies act independently in many respects and can thus respond particularly to the respective local conditions, specifications and special features (= “profit center structure”). This is what sets us apart as NKG and is one of our greatest strengths. Our Group structure with a central holding function also offers many advantages: We can bundle topics in Hamburg that have (or will have) relevance for all companies, develop and offer solutions for which there are no capacities or resources in the companies, and provide support with a wide range of technical expertise.

But what does the ideal interaction between the holding company and the group companies look like? What works well and where can we work together even better? And what support can we offer the companies in Hamburg?

“We see our primary responsibilities in giving each and every company in NKG the tools they need to successfully operate their respective and varied businesses; and developing our business overall, giving it direction and diversity and pulling it together to something much larger than the sum of its parts – NKG.”

David M. Neumann,
Group CEO, Neumann Gruppe

KEEPING THE GROUP COMPANIES’ AUTONOMY

Ruben Scholz, who has been part of the Board of Management as Group COO since May 1st of this year, brings an interesting perspective to this interaction between the holding and the group companies. Through many trips to the producing countries and many different positions, from trading to Managing Director at Bero Coffee Singapore, Ruben has been able to gather a wide range of impressions and experiences.

Bringing these insights together with the holding company’s perspective and incorporating them in the best possible way into the new position is one of the challenges he is facing with great enthusiasm.

“The fact that the group companies have a high degree of autonomy in operational responsibility at NKG is certainly one of the great advantages of our structure. Even if certain topics make it necessary for us to work on them together or even manage them from within the holding – the aim of the cooperation is to provide as much support and advice as necessary while exerting as little influence as possible,” explains Ruben. In particular, topics in a strongly changing regulatory environment, such as the current topic of deforestation, can be prepared specifically by the holding in Hamburg. In exchange with the companies, strategies are developed which then serve as approaches to solutions for all NKG companies. By maintaining a strategic overview, the holding ensures that NKG remains competitive and successful.

COLLABORATION THROUGH COMMUNICATION

When working with the group companies, Ruben would particularly like to emphasize the word together: “Without the commitment of the companies, the implementation of our strategies would not work. This also means that we in the holding question ourselves and look at how we approach the group companies.

Through my work with colleagues around the world, especially of course in my role as Managing Director at Bero Coffee Singapore, I have gained an insight into a group company’s view.

Here, I see potential to further strengthen mutual understanding and trust through intensive exchange and transparent communication, for example an even more closely integrated coaching. When we approach the Group companies with topics or requirements, we do so so that everyone benefits in the long term. We weigh carefully what we really place with everyone.”

Due to the different local circumstances, an empathetic approach is very important. In addition, clear communication of the meaning of measures and also naming benefits helps to generate more intrinsic motivation.

Group COO,

“This meaningful communication is also one of my personal concerns as a member of the management team,” adds Ruben. “I am convinced that we can inspire and engage employees even more if we emphasize the ‘why’ of our measures more clearly. In this way, we can convey a shared understanding of our goals. Why do the coaches exist in Hamburg? What are the benefits of implementing global HR software? Why do we need common business processes? These are questions, for example, that I’m sure many employees are asking.” It is important to respect the realities of different countries and companies and to embrace cultural differences and needs. In order to live an appreciative culture, the diversity of the companies needs to be encountered with empathy and openness.

EXAMPLE: WORKDAY

One example where this approach is now becoming relevant is the aforementioned new global HR system Workday. “We took a close look at the areas where we could create synergies with Workday as a group and where we had to pay attention to local circumstances and legalities,” reports Maren Uzarek, Director Group Human Resources. “With the new system, we are creating a common database for everyone. At the same time, we are adapting the tool to the respective needs of the companies. In a project like this, it is especially the HR regionals and the HR employees in the companies without whose support and input we would not be able to implement the project in this way.

However, it is not only the HR teams that will benefit from Workday, as it will save them an enormous amount of time and reduce their workload. The system will also give employees at all companies direct access to their data and, thanks to simplified processes, they will gain time that they can use elsewhere,” she adds. In order to involve all colleagues worldwide right from the start, a whole team from different departments has developed a concept how to communicate and establish Workday at NKG. Read more about this, as well as the benefits, the implementation and the first concrete steps in the Workday article.

An important contribution to a common group-wide database is also the survey with WeSustain, on the results of which last year’s Sustainability Report was based. This year, a short reflection of the first run and a small insight into the current survey can be found here. Also presented in detail is NG Coaching: Nicolaus Fallmeier talked to us about current developments. Of course, our popular Human Touch section is back, we welcome the new PACE partners, celebrate anniversaries and much more!

We wish you a lot of fun with this new issue of NKG Connected!

Reflecting on past processes and enabling a glimpse into the future: NKG Sustainability Report

Last year, we published our Sustainability Report in a completely new structure, format and design. Launched in 2020, our Responsible Business Program served as a basis for the definition of (most) KPIs and the (following) data collection. This year, there will be an internal report focusing on data rather than design and a shortened external version. So, while we are waiting for the next report, Melissa Chavana, Camila Engel and Nicole Ochojski, who are responsible for the data collection, will give you a little glimpse behind the scenes on how the first reporting process with the new software WeSustain went last year, what they are working on right now and what you can expect to come up next.

Mail from NG Comms: A personal update

It is quite easy to write about synergies, group feelings and close relationships – to really live this group identity and strengthen a feeling of belonging and connection is something incredibly more difficult. We at NG Comms are aware of this discrepancy between talking and writing about something and actually living it. Thus, communicating with all of you is one of our top priorities, especially through publications like our Connected.
