Fostering empowerment

As a global organization with multifaceted companies, we have a strong commitment to diversity. We also understand that (gender) equality is not only a matter of fairness, but also a key driver of innovative solutions and sustainable growth/business success. Striving to promote a more diverse and inclusive work environment, where everyone can thrive, we would like to introduce you to two women, who have made significant contributions in their respective fields: Anna Fath, NG Coaching, and Juliete A. De Paula Botelho, Mill Operator at NKG Stockler.

This year in May, Anna became the first female Coach at Neumann Gruppe in Hamburg. As she had already worked in mainly male teams before, she did not consider this fact while applying for the position. “Working in my previous job as a Trader at Bernhard Rothfos was rather a specialization, and I saw the opportunity to work with many different companies all around the globe at NG Coaching and get a broader view on the whole business at NKG”, explains Anna her decision to enter this new career path.

What she would like to bring to the Coaching team is not about especially female perceived positions or ideas: “I would like to focus on my individual strengths, and I think that, in general, this is a helpful perspective. As Coaches, we are, amongst other responsibilities, a link between the group companies and our holding here in Hamburg,” she says. “So, it is very helpful that I like to dive deep into topics and that I am able to enhance the connection, exchange, and understanding between different people and perspectives in combination with my experience in different sectors of the coffee sector,” she is convinced. While Anna also experienced the feeling that she had to prove herself more than others as a young woman in her previous career, she decides not to attach too much importance to this fact, preferring instead to take a different view: “For me, in a team – and company – it is about diverse ways of thinking, exchanging knowledge and connecting with people from different backgrounds regarding gender, age, nationality etc. – you need these differences to have insightful discussions and learn from each other.”

What would Anna like to tell other women at NKG? “I think that networks are key to having success. Help, support and learn from each other (of course, not only women) and try to find people to grow with. Don´t be afraid to apply for a position you like to fill. You will learn and grow with new responsibilities. For me, it is motivating to also see women in leadership positions and have female role models. So, if this article helps to inspire or motivate any woman to pursue her goals and grow, then I would be very happy.”

“If you see a job you feel very passionate about but do fit only about 80 % of the requested skills – just go for it and show how much you would like to learn. You can do it.”

Anna Fath,
Neumann Gruppe

Juliete at NKG Stockler followed a similar approach and just went for what she dreamed of – a job in the coffee mill, where the selection of beans is carried out. “I decided to move from a warehouse assistant role to mill operator and during my learning curve, only one task I was not able to do as my colleagues, which was the change of screens from the graders,” says Juliete. This was due to the physical effort it requires and there is no tool available in the market to facilitate this task. To her great joy, NKG Stockler took this as an opportunity and internally created a tool to perform the task, eliminating this obstacle and enabling any person (women or men) to perform all tasks in the milling process.

Juliete really likes her job and is happy she took this decision: “Of course, there were some people, who were unsure about whether I would be able to do this job, and there were some obstacles I was facing”, she admits. While this is understandable because of the novelty this change implied, there were many supporters believing in Juliete. She is very thankful to everyone making her career change possible: “At first, being the only woman in the mill was quite a challenge and I was even afraid to not get all my tasks done. Today, I see that it has evolved a lot, and I am very grateful for every friendly welcome and every supporter I had.” Right now, she is one of two women working in the Mill, and there are more female colleagues interested in becoming part of the mill team.

Juliete’s message to other women applying for a new position:

“I am very happy to be an example for opening the doors to our mill for women. You do not need to be afraid – if you really want something and there is support, then everything will work out. I am proud and will forever be grateful to be in this position, and I would love other women to feel the same.”

  1. It’s truly heartening to be a part of an organization that not only recognizes the value that women bring to the table but actively seeks to provide them with equal opportunities for growth, leadership, and success. From promoting women into leadership positions to fostering a supportive environment that encourages diverse perspectives, your dedication to gender equality is both admirable and inspiring.

Mail from NG Comms: A personal Update

We talked about it in this issue a lot: if everything is crazy and fast enough, how can we structure us and communicate inside our group, literally INSIDE NKG, to make it clearer for you and all of us? With that in mind, we at NG Comms did our best to enhance our internal communication activities for the future. We really did. You cannot imagine how long it took us to discuss, for example, the new names of our communication channels so that they would make sense and everyone would immediately know what we are talking about.
