The NKG PACE Partners are Settling in and Everyone is Learning

The inaugural Partners in the Neumann Kaffee Gruppe Partnership to Advance Coffee Equity (NKG PACE) began their one-year educational journeys May 2, with an intensive orientation week. Things have hardly slowed down since.

Charles Umeano, a Brooklyn resident (one week out from his wedding day) had the easy task of crossing two rivers to New Jersey to tie on an apron in the NKG North American headquarters lab, alongside InterAmerican’s Ed Kaufmann and Rothfos Corporations’ Rich Martin.

Of his journey so far, Charles offers, “I’ve had the opportunity to lead my own QC initiatives and have gotten immensely more comfortable with sample roasting and cupping. … I’m looking forward to calibrating with the rest of the NKG quality team as well as creating my own sample roast profile.”

Jay Terrell, a Houston native (whose pronouns are they/them), packed up and headed for the always-perfect weather of San Diego and an InterAmerican team that greeted them with their favorite dessert: root beer floats!

“My favorite part of the journey so far has been learning to calibrate with my team. I think coffee can be a very personal experience, but by cupping daily with them, I can feel my own palate being trained and bolstered to taste coffee in new ways and for new purposes,” says Jayy. “I’m super excited to continue this work!”

Finally, Porttia Portis moved from Dallas to the Atlas office in Seattle, where her team already values her photo skills, journalistic nature and exhaustive houseplant knowledge.

“Most days currently consist of cupping in the morning, lectures and PACE readings into the afternoon, and processing outbound sample orders to end the day,” says Porttia. “Outbound processing is currently my favorite thing because of the satisfaction of completing a task from start to finish. It also helps me to familiarize myself with the sample library and just how diverse coffee truly is.”

Amanda Armbrust-Asselin, QC and education lead for NKG PACE, recently reflected on the program’s initial logistical challenges.

“Each company is quite different, with different customers and coffee,” she explained. “How could we create a unified program in very different environments? How could we ensure consistency across placements? How do you teach sensory skills remotely? My answer was to augment the apprenticeship with a rigorous education program that also encourages independent skill building, to position the Partners to take ownership of their personal development.”

That rigor includes a Speaker Series organized around a different topic each month. Like the program overall, the Series is proving to offer benefits well beyond the expected ones. “These events are bringing the NGUS teams closer together!” one trader enthused in a quick note of thanks, following a collaborative talk.

Atlas Quality Control Manager Gavin Tull-Esterbrook, when asked about the addition of an NKG PACE Partner to his team, echoed this sentiment.

“It’s been wonderful having Porttia’s astute observations during our QC cuppings, and her excitement to learn has not only aided in her success but has brought a wonderful energy that’s contagious and fun,” he explained. “I appreciate how her comradery has helped rebuild the office culture after two years of constant adaptation to world events.”

As the Partners settle into their respective offices, “we’re identifying the gaps in certain processes, which requires engagement and communication from various teams,” adds Amanda. “It’s actually working in our favor.”
