Smart design for a sustainable future: The Ibero Uganda mill project

An exciting and forward-looking project is underway in Uganda. In the first quarter, the construction of a new mill was started. The Uganda mill represents a significant step forward in Ibero Uganda’s operations. It will replace the more than 20-year-old facility in the old industrial area of Kampala, which has space and capacity constraints and aging equipment. The new mill will be equipped with the latest technology, which will increase efficiency, resulting in lower operating costs and restoring the competitive edge. Health and environmental concerns will be addressed through the use of energy-efficient technology, a high degree of automation, and a focus on the future workplace.

At the outset, the project considered the challenges facing the industry and how it could provide solutions through smart design and technology choices. “Despite current challenges, adopting sustainable strategies is crucial for long-term success. Investing in a modern facility now will enable us to meet growing regulatory and consumer demands for environmental, social, and governance standards and give us an edge over the competition in the long term”, says Marten Sievers, CEO NKG East Africa. Therefore, the project was planned and is implemented along four key areas: “Resource Use”, “Waste”, “Social”, and “Physical Environment”. The focus areas are central to NKG’s comprehensive approach to sustainability.

With an expected completion date of Q2 2025, the team hopes to begin operations in time for the May/June 2025 harvest and continue its growth plans from there. “I am particularly excited about this project’s potential to contribute to NKG’s growth agenda, its development in East Africa, and Uganda’s coffee sector. Additionally, developing the hypothesis for this project, aimed at preparing us for the future, was particularly thrilling. We focused on finding the best solutions to the sector’s challenges in Uganda and beyond, with the goal of creating a sustainable mill that provides a competitive edge through a high degree of automation and resulting efficiency bringing down our operational costs”, Marten Sievers explains.

A great project that should encourage us all to tackle future-oriented topics with a sustainable strategy and drive them forward together with enthusiasm! Please find some model pictures here, we will share real pictures of the mill as soon as possible in our INSIDE NKG MAG.
