The EU Regulation on Deforestation-Free Products (EUDR) came into force on June 29, 2023 and has proven to be a complex topic, which already has manyfold implications for our work and will even be more relevant in the future. Therefore, it is very important for us to create a solid understanding within NKG. A new e-learning module available for all NKG employees aims to summarize and deliver the content and implications of the EUDR. The aim is to present the content in a more interactive format.

Together with other companies, NKG has joined the new inter-agency project “Ending Child Labour in Supply Chains”, led by the International Labour Organization and funded by the European Union, to address the root causes of child labour in supply chains, focusing primarily on coffee in Honduras, Uganda and Vietnam. The private sector will play a central role in this project as CLP member companies will participate directly in the project’s implementation and activities.
In September, we celebrated our summerparty with all Hamburg based companies. With unusually high temperatures for that time of the year, it was literally a hot event. We celebrated under the motto: conquer the dance floor in an outfit that matches your favorite music style! Applause to all the colleagues who put on wigs and other costumes despite it being well over 30 degrees!

NKG Bloom has been recognized by Global Coffee Platform (GCP) as Coffee SR Code equivalent – 2nd party assurance. “GCP’s recognition of NKG Bloom acknowledges the work of our local teams, who are supporting smallholder farmers on the ground to reach their full potential and find a way out of poverty. It strengthens our goal to improve the livelihoods of 300,000 coffee farming families by 2030. We are honored that our sustainability initiatives, NKG Verified and Bloom, are both aligned with the Coffee SR Code and the EM 2.0”, says Ruben Scholz, Group COO.
We have signed an agreement for the use of the Cargoo platform to cover our group’s needs as a transport and related documentation management system. Cargoo will not only improve the supply chain visibility of all NKG logistic departments and thus support us in optimizing inventory management, but the software will also enable us to eliminate multiple data input and to implement a modern and standardized process globally, being fully integrated into our future digital eco-system. The implementation process will start soon.
NKG Learning Reminder
As the year is almost over, here comes a friendly reminder: Full-time employees are entitled to 12 hours of paid learning time each year. For part-time employees, learning time is proportionate. On NKG-Learning, you will find a variety of courses including topics such as leadership, health and safety, communication, sustainability, digital skills and more. Make the most of your available time by selecting courses that align with your interests and personal growth objectives.
Coming up in 2024
The World of Coffee show travels to Asia for the very first time! The exhibition and the 2024 World Barista Championship will be held in Busan, Korea May 1 – 4, 2024!
Also for the first time, the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) will be hosting three global trade shows in the same years. The other events are in Dubai, United Araba Emirates, January 21- 23 and in Copenhagen, Denmark, July 27 – 29.

The fact that we are in a time of development and that there are many innovations and changes has been emphasized many times in the last issues of Connected. What we have not yet looked at in more detail is the question of what this actually means for all of us. So, in this issue of our Connected, we want to ask (and answer) exactly this question: What does our group structure at NKG actually look like now, and what does this mean for the holding company and the companies?
Group Human Resources has big and exciting news: A new global Human Resources Information System (HRIS) called Workday will be rolled out within NKG. Workday is a state-of-the-art HRIS, that offers great benefits for each individual employee, promises to simplify our HR processes, and increase efficiency and data security at NKG. It will be the first time in the history of NKG that all companies and employees worldwide use the same HRIS. What an exciting step for all of us together!
