Together over distance: first virtual NKG Work Together

In normal times, the Board of Management holds regular meetings at the office in Hamburg with selected colleagues from NKG to discuss current and upcoming business issues. Although we are currently still far away from these normal times, the Work Together took place again this year.

However, the event being virtually could not stop an expanded group of participants from working on an ambitious agenda. 88 guests from 34 group companies around the globe were invited to Part 1. Within three hours, the Board provided basic information about the current situation of NKG and presented a central topic for the future of the company: Growth in all its facets, opportunities and risks, will occupy NKG intensively in the upcoming years.

Main topics:

GROWTH
Supply Chains
Human Resources
Digitalization

David M. Neumann started with some remarks about the ongoing Covid-19-pandemic. Of course, he would have preferred a face-to-face meeting, but pointed out that not in all countries where NG is represented the situation is developing as well as, for example, in Germany. To all colleagues suffering from Covid-19 themselves or dealing with a loss of friends or family, Mr. Neumann expressed his sympathy and condolences.

In the course of his presentation, Mr. Neumann announced four strategic priorities for the future: growth, supply chains, digitalization and human resources, whereas the last three can also be seen as a sub-topic of growth. For our customers, NKG is the supplier of first choice – and this needs to become sustainable, as Mr. Neumann underlined. “Customers need us today more than ever,” the CEO said. But: “we need to rise above our routines.”

The group’s good financial situation allows to invest in the future. The question is: where can investments go? Among sectors like data, colleagues, measurability and sustainability, Mr. Neumann also mentioned Risk Management, since targeting growth also means taking on a higher level of risk. Bringing both into balance with each other will be the central challenge in the near future and the Work Together is intended to provide initial approaches and ideas for this.

An overview about the business situation

For the basic facts, Ana Wilks from NKG Statistical Unit provided the participants with a prognosis for developments over the next five years and took a closer look at global production, green export availability, global demand, and global supply and demand balance. Afterwards, Jörn Severloh, Group COO, presented Year-to-date (YTD) Business Development of NKG and the group’s sales volume. COO Pablo Garcia informed about world consumption and NKG sales participation 2020. Justin Schulze-Smidt, CFO, provided data about NKG’s use of capital and the financing framework. In addition Ralf Lotze, Director Finances, talked about financial challenges. As the last speaker for the day, Director of Strategic Projects and Coaching Coordination, Philippe Cañadas gave an overview about NKG’s major investments between 2014 and 2021, which was in industrial export facilities, dry and wet mills, and warehouses.

Working groups start their efforts

The next step will be to form working groups, consisting of about 10 persons each from different companies. The working groups will deal with specific topics and provide their proposals back to the Board, which will consider the results as foundation of the upcoming business plans and strategies. Especially the different perspectives of the employees are substantial for David M. Neumann and the other Board members. Although everyone is very motivated to get started right away, Mr. Neumann pointed out that we are entering a long process, which targets the years 2030/2031. He emphasized: “important is not where we want to go but that we want to go.” For him, it is fundamental that we all learn together and from each other.

The 2nd day of the Work Together will probably take place in August. With the summer break just around the corner, it will take some time before plans become more concrete. We’ll keep you posted in upcoming issues of NKG Connected!
