NKG Holding
“who is who”:
NG Communications

Neumann Gruppe in Hamburg consists of departments with a diverse variety of functions and competencies, which both serve the general strategic orientation of NKG and provide specific support for the group companies. Some departments and services are already known to many, while others have been working more in the background. We would like to use our INSIDE NKG MAG to close this gap and have therefore initiated the “who is who” series. Here, we want to look at what competencies exist in the holding, for whom these could be helpful and interesting, who is responsible for what, and a lot more.

Connecting the dots – with communication

Connecting the dots – with communication

Communications changes as fast as the world around us – new topics and new requirements emerge and lead to changes in the department, so that we are able to live up to the challenges. As Communication is an important topic for the group, we at NG Communications directly work with David M. Neumann. In order to do justice to the importance of the topic, there are also an increasing number of Communication and Marketing responsibles in our group companies, with whom we are currently setting up a global network.

Being responsible for internal and external groupwide communication, we give guidelines and specifications in line with our Corporate Identity, based on our overall strategy and supporting our goals at NKG. While we are doing this mostly on a global level, we leave the flexibility to implement those demands to the local needs and requirements of each company – hand in hand with the respective person who is in charge of Communications or Marketing locally.

With how and what we communicate, we also reflect our Corporate Identity to shape a specific brand image of NKG that we have manifested in our Brand Manifesto. So, communication is really way more than just writing texts and designing templates. It can support reaching strategic goals, facilitate a strong relationship with internal and external audiences, enable ways of working together and also be an integral part of shaping the culture lived at NKG. Thus, we do our best to contribute in the most positive way possible.

Who is working at NG Communications?

Who is working at NG Communications?

Let’s start introducing ourselves with Lena Tippel, Head of Communications, who has been at NKG for almost seven years now. She took over the Comms team in 2020, when she had already worked in Communications & Marketing at InterAmerican Coffee Europe and Bernhard Rothfos for about three years before. Besides being the one with an eye on the whole team and all the department’s activities, Lena is concerned with everything strategy or concept related. She also focuses on the overall NKG Corporate Identity and Design and is always looking for enhancements with regards to our channels and communication efforts – internally as well as externally.

Lena’s highlights in 2023

“I find it difficult to pick one highlight – what I like and appreciate about my work at NKG is that there are new exciting projects around the corner and topics with potential to develop all the time. It is a fast-moving field, which never gets monotonous or even boring. It’s also great to lead a both highly knowledgeable and dedicated team that complements each other. And although we are a small team, we were able to develop and enhance a lot of different topics. At the same time, I enjoy(ed) working together with colleagues from everywhere around the globe or hosting them in Hamburg – for example at the NKG Round Table Event.”

Benjamin Loske has been working with Lena and the Communications team since 2020 – right before Covid-19 made onboarding a bit of a challenge. After two weeks, he had to switch to working remotely most of the time. He was very happy when he was finally able to return to the Coffee Plaza and get to know all the colleagues in Hamburg better. As a Graphic Designer, his focus is, not surprisingly, anything related to design. If it is about creativity and generating ideas, developing logos and templates, creating designs for advertisements, giveaways, presents, exhibitions, presentations or websites – Benjamin is surely the expert to ask. And his job is not only about making things look nice but diving deeper into communication concepts and developing design systems.

Benjamin’s highlights in 2023

“In addition to the varied tasks that my normal working day entails, I had the chance to attend some exciting trainings and conferences and exchange with others on topics like the role of design in business contexts, creativity techniques and – last but not least – the impact and possibilities of AI in design. And – surprisingly for me at first – AI is now actually proving to be a good sparring partner for some of my tasks.”

Still following Covid-19 restrictions and working from home half of the week, Julia Wichert and Nina Wonerow started working at NG Comms in May (Julia) and June (Nina) 2021. Due to the regulations, the whole team needed more than a month to meet everyone in person.

Focusing on internal communications, Julia is especially responsible for the INSIDE NKG MAG and was working on the new concept and strategy together with Lena this year a lot. When she is not collecting input or writing for the MAG, Julia is externally concerned with the NKG LinkedIn channel and general Social Media topics. Next year, she will also (again) be working on the NKG Sustainability Report 2024.

Julia’s highlights in 2023

“I have two highlights: The first one is the internal communication project. I loved digging deep into how we communicate and what could be done to improve our communication and make it more strategic. The second highlight was getting to know the people who are responsible for Social Media in their companies. Talking to them was a great opportunity to meet colleagues from many different companies and a lot of fun.”

If there is a critical media request or a topic with reputational risk going on anywhere at NKG: Nina is definitely the right person to be involved! She not only oversees all Public Relation related topics – from issue/crisis communication to press inquiries, press releases, campaigns, reviews etc. –, but also supports internally with input for the MAG and HUB and supervises our trainees.

Nina’s highlights in 2023

“One was working with the Workday project team, where I got to work on change management communications. I learned so much during this time and had the opportunity to meet many colleagues from all over the world. I absolutely loved it, and I’m proud of what we accomplished together! I am also happy that this year we managed to be represented in almost all major coffee trade media with advertisements, articles or interviews. Oh, and I went to the World of Coffee in Athens. Yes, it was a pretty cool year!”
