THE HUMAN TOUCH

Interview with

Tom Gammer & Gerrit Krueger

In the summer of 2021, management at InterAmerican Coffee UK in London (IAC) underwent a change: Gerrit Krüger, previously working for IAC in Hamburg, and Tom Gammer, who was already with IAC UK, were appointed as Co-Managing Directors. Neil Barwick, the previous Managing Director, also accepted a new challenge as COO at IAC in New York. Tom Gammer started his career with NKG in October 2005 as Back Office Administrator and joined InterAmerican Coffee in May 2011 as Trader/Quality Controller. Gerrit Krüger became part of NKG in 2009. Following an internship at InterAmerican Coffee in Hamburg, he took over responsibility as Specialty Trader and was promoted to Senior Trader in January 2018. We are very excited that they are giving us a chance to get to know them better in this Connected issue.

How do you relax best after a busy day at work?

Tom Gammer

A chilled bottle of Sanford Orchards Cider whilst watching one of my football teams Chelsea, West Ham, Leyton Orient (3 teams it’s complicated!)

Gerrit Krueger

During the summer, I often jump on the motorbike and go for a ride whenever I find the time – motorbikes are my greatest passion and the best way to disconnect, whether it’s riding, preparing the bikes for the next trackdays or watching races on TV. But I also enjoy jogging and sports in general, playing the drums, cooking and meeting friends after work.

What are you most grateful for in your life?

Tom Gammer

Family & friends above anything

Gerrit Krueger

For having a great family and group of close and long-time friends that I can always rely on. And for having been able to travel to so many exciting places already, both privately and during coffee origin trips.

How do you make your coffee at home (Capsules, pads, filter, bean-to-cup coffee machine)?

Tom Gammer

Moccamaster drip machine

Gerrit Krueger

I usually drink black filter coffee at home using a Hario V60.
What makes you laugh a lot?

Tom Gammer

Just people watching in London can be VERY entertaining

Gerrit Krueger

Funny everyday moments, good comedy and satire, the weird things in life.

Tom Gammer & Gerrit Krueger

What is the most important thing to do on your bucket list and why?

Tom Gammer

Watch England in a world cup final with my dad, who remembers every minute of England’s victory in 1966

Gerrit Krueger

I don’t really have a bucket list, but I’d love to travel to South Africa again soon with my fiancée. I also want to attend the ‘Isle of Man TT’ race – one of the most iconic motorcycle road races – for the time being only as a spectator, but who knows.

When was your first visit to London and why did you go there?

In 2008, just before starting my internship, to find an apartment for those six months.

What do you like most about London?

This special ‘London feeling’ – it never gets boring, there’s always so much going on and so much to do, I love the (food) markets, the music scene, the many less-famous areas I am still exploring, and – of course – the great British pubs.

In which way is it different from living in Hamburg?

It’s much busier, bigger and louder, but it’s also more sociable, I like the fact that you always see people meeting in the pub after work before heading home.

What do you miss about living in Germany?

German bakeries. And the German autobahn.

When and how did you first meet Mr Gammer?

Probably 10 years ago, shortly after we both joined IAC. I think at the ‘Caffe Culture’ show in London.

Do you remember any special experience you share with Mr Gammer?

A couple of entertaining pub nights throughout the years and his visit to Hamburg for the traditional “TH-Verein” boat trip (association of companies involved in the coffee trade in Hamburg) a few years ago.

What do you think Mr Gammer should write on his bucket list when visiting Hamburg?

He has probably already done most of the things you should do when visiting Hamburg, but I would always recommend a barbecue and sundowner at the Elbstrand, canoeing on the Alster, and eating ‘Labskaus’.

What do you wish Mr Barwick for his time in the United States?

Much fun and great success!

The times you have been to Hamburg, what did you like most about it?

I love the quayside around Hafencity – on my early visits I always remember the long drawn out completion of the Elbphilharmonie – it looks stunning now and I would love to visit it one day.

What do you like most about living in London?

The multi cultural society & environment – whether it’s curry on Brick Lane or Bao in China town. There is something for everyone.

When and how did you first meet Mr Krüger?

On my first day at IAC! Gerrit came to London to help Neil Barwick at a trade show – I remember thinking this was very cool.

Do you remember any special experience you share with Mr Krüger?

Many beers shared, memories short – signs fun was had.

What do you think Mr Krüger should write on his bucket list while living in London?

Explore every crevice London has to offer North, South, East, West – you could life here a lifetime and never complete it – it constantly surprises you.

What do you wish Mr Barwick for his time in the United States?

For him to have educated IAC USA firmly in some English ol’cockney rhyming slang.
