Hellen Akumu Opuko

It was her first coffee-related job when Hellen Akumu Opuko joined NKG in July 2022 as Regional Head of HR East Africa. Through this job, she realized the value of coffee. Although Hellen did not even know what a coffee lab looked like when starting her career at NKG, she now has even more interest in coffee and also coffee farming: for the few coffee bushes her husband has (Bungoma and Turbo, Kenya), she is the expert now regarding pruning, applying fertilizer and picking the best cherries during harvesting! Now, she would not want to work with any other product than coffee! This is not only due to the great product, but also because she loves the spirit of her team. The dynamism and positivity make her embrace each day and its’ new challenges. The growth opportunities at NKG are also something Hellen appreciates. And if it was not HR that fascinated her? “I would swap jobs with Cariappa Nadikerianda – COO NKG East Africa and a Coffee Trader”, reveals Hellen and adds: “I admire his work as trading is the engine of the business. I would be travelling to meet my clients globally, traveling to visit farms to check on the crop quality and production, traveling to origins Iike Brazil who control the coffee market globally. While traveling I would be taking lots and lots of pictures for memories.”

five things
you like
I love Nyama choma (African BBQ), traditional brown mushrooms and Omena 😊 (Lake Victoria Sardines)

I love travelling out of the city for short stays with family and friends.

Cycling, a hobby I developed in my childhood.

I am a shopaholic. I find myself buying an extra suitcase every time I travel.

I love dancing to African music.

I love taking pictures; how could I forget this 😊

What does a perfect weekend look like for you?

A perfect weekend for me would be a spontaneous one, nothing planned. It could be a drive out of the city, game drive, shopping with family, an afternoon lunch or dinner with friends or just lazing around the house with a book or a movie.

I am always ready to pack and go.

What is the most memorable trip or vacation you’ve ever taken and why?

My recent trip to the HQ – Hamburg in February 2023. This trip brought the ideology of NKG closer home. Through this trip I was able to interact with the team that would normally interact with the faces behind the kind regards and best wishes.

How do you like to drink your coffee and in which situation?

I enjoy iced coffee with some little honey while traveling especially if I have a connecting flight. At every airport I get an iced coffee.

What makes you laugh a lot

Human Resources as a profession and career can be tough at times. Who is HR for HR? What most people don’t realise is that HR needs HR for themselves. My HR colleagues create a fun environment, we laugh a lot and that keeps me going. I sometimes crack jokes and laugh at them alone 😊. There’s enough going on in our world to make us all feel sad so I try to find the small things in life that make me laugh. Mr. Bean, Modern Family and Lion King are some of the TV shows and movies that I enjoy watching. I love memes too.

Do you have any hidden skill nobody expects you to have?

I guess in my other world I could be a pro cyclist. I can ride a bicycle pretty well. I can also cook well and with some consistency I could become a chef.  I have tried modelling too, in campus days. So I guess there is some of that in me too. And I can change a car tire if my life depended on it. I am also skilled at driving. I was recently awarded for safe car parking at work during the NKG Awareness Day 2023.

If you could be any fictional character for a week, who would it be and what adventures would you have?

That would be Spiderman my favorite superhero. I would take the same the leap of faith from the highest building just to have a feel of it. Watch cities from the highest point, taking beautiful pictures while swinging from building to building.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received, and who gave it to you?

“Pay the price. Constantly improve. Over deliver on your promises. Raise your work ethic and you’ll raise your standards. Raise your standards and success becomes inevitable” by Sharon Kotut – a former colleague and great mentor.
