THE HUMAN TOUCH

Interview with

Cariappa Nadikerianda

Coffee has always had a place in his life: Cariappa Nadikerianda grew up on his family’s farm and has always been involved in coffee. In his early 20’s, he started working in his family’s business which manages and leases coffee farms in Southern India and developed his passion for coffee during that time. He has been working for NKG for the last seven years. First, as a trader, then as Commercial director and currently as COO at NKG East Africa. Being surrounded by people who are as passionate or even more passionate about coffee than him is what he likes most about working with his team. We are very much looking forward getting to know him better now!

How do you relax best after a busy day at work?

These days, I get in time to spend time with my son who’s almost 15 months old. Perfect way to unwind.

What is the most beautiful place you have ever been to?

Wasn’t really about the place. But I had been to Tromso in Norway to see the Northern lights. The Northern lights are truly an amazing spectacle.

What would you do if you won one million in the lottery?

I would probably buy a house on the Kenyan coast.

What are you most grateful for in your life?

I’m most grateful for my family. While so many people lost loved ones to COVID, I was fortunate to not have lost close family. COVID really changed my perspective on life and I make an extra effort to spend as much time with family as possible.

How do you make your coffee at home (Capsules, pads, filter, bean-to-cup coffee machine)?

An Espro French press on most days. For those of you using a French press, switch to an Espro . No more sludge at the bottom of your cup!! I use an Aeropress when I’m not in a rush.

What makes you laugh a lot?

TV shows. The Office and Parks & Recreation are hilarious.

What would you try if you know you can only succeed?

The Kenya Coffee board liquoring exam!! I flunked it by 1 percentage point several years ago. Haven’t mustered enough courage to have another go.

What is the most important thing to do on your bucket list and why?

I’ve already ticked off what I thought would be the most challenging thing on my bucket list. I’d flown by the Kilimanjaro so many times and it looked intimidating, even that high up from the air. So didn’t think I’d ever attempt to climb it. But finally climbed it a couple of year of ago. Hiked it over 7 days. I was surprised at how enjoyable it was. Haha.

Which type of coffee drinker are you?
five things
you like

  • When it comes to food, I love Biriyani. I could eat it for all three meals if possible. 😊

  • My wife and I love traveling. Given the abundance of wildlife in Kenya, we want to try and visit all the national parks in the country.

  • I’m an avid follower of Formula One and support Mclaren. The Austin Grandprix is a bucket list item.

  • I enjoy living in Kenya. The weather is fantastic through the year, the people are warm, it has beautiful national parks and great beaches. Oh and I almost forgot: Kenya has some of the best coffee in the world!!

  • Goes without saying that I love a good cup of coffee. Though I trade Kenyan coffee for a living, my favourite coffee is a washed Yirgacheffe.
