THE HUMAN TOUCH

Interview with

Ana Wilks

Ana Wilks has worked for NKG twice, once as an assistant at NKG Statistical Unit for 5 years 1998-2003. After 10 years in commercial/trading roles at another trading company, she returned to NKG to head up the Statistical Unit. “My career has become full circle”, she says. As a Brazilian, she always had a connection to coffee as it’s the first thing people say when they hear the word Brazil. However, Ana didn’t start drinking coffee until she was at university and needed to stay awake overnight to write her essays! Being a Brazilian who has lived in many different countries when she grew up, she identifies with many colleagues who speak many languages and feel that they “belong” in many different places. She likes the fact that NKG feels like a small company where everyone knows each other despite it being a big company. Now we are happy to get to know Ana Wilks better!

“My great grandfather was a coffee farmer in the early 20th century.”

How do you relax best after a busy day at work?

I like to spend time outdoors, getting some fresh air and exercise with my family, which often combines with taking my kids to/from some activities on foot or by bike. I also like to cook, share a noisy meal with my family full of laughter and conversation.

What is the most beautiful place you have ever been to?

This is a hard question because I’ve been to so many beautiful places! Many of these were on field trips looking at coffee farms. One of the most beautiful has got to be walking from waterfall to waterfall and swimming in the pristine natural environment of Bonito in Brazil with fishes, birds and insects all around, which we did as a family in 2019.

What would you do if you won one million in the lottery?

I’d take my whole extended family on a super fun holiday. After that I’d probably give much of the rest of the money away to people who need it more than I do.

What are you most grateful for in your life?
My health, my family and friends. Who needs more.
How do you make your coffee at home (capsules, pads, filter, bean-to-cup coffee machine)?
If it’s just me, I use the aeropress. If there’s more of us, the French press.
What makes you laugh a lot?
Trying to get into some very cold water for a swim after my children. Having a few drinks with my friends.
What would you try if you know you can only succeed?
Impossible not to say something noble like work towards peace for Ukraine or a cancer cure?
What is the most important thing to do on your bucket list and why?
Visit more places in the world, especially after not being able to go anywhere during the pandemic.
