Interview with

Thomas Silva

Thomas Silva first started his career in coffee when he worked as a divisional controller for the Noble Group Coffee Division on the first day the desk/department opened. After working with different commodities (energy, metals, softs), he kept coming back to agricultural commodities and specifically coffee. He enjoys the diversity of the product and working for companies that are involved in all aspects of the coffee value chain. In his year as CFO at NGUS, Tom valued the teamwork and working towards a common goal. “What I also like about NKG is that we are continually improving the way we work and collaborate with other departments”, says Tom and adds: “When working for a global company, it’s important to take advantage of global synergies and learning how other offices work.” And what would he be interested in learning more about if he was able to swap jobs with anyone at NKG? “I would swap jobs with Justin Schulze-Smidt, Group CFO. I think it would be interesting to get the view of CFO role from the holding perspective.”

What does a perfect weekend look like for you?

The perfect weekend would be a slow weekend with the family and a limited agenda and plenty of sun. Will define that as a beach weekend with the only involved travel being to walk from hotel to the beach – no cars involved. Some quality adventure and downtown with the family.

What is the most memorable trip or vacation you’ve ever taken and why?

My first business trip to Vietnam to set up the accounting and function in Ho Chi Minh City. As an American, who did not realize there is more to the world than the United States, this was a trip that demonstrated to me what the rest of the world is capable of. This has continually been reinforced when visiting various countries.

How do you like to drink your coffee and in which situation? (For example, a Café Latte in a nice café on weekends, an Espresso at work …)

I am not a very bold coffee drinker as I have been influenced by Dunkin Doughnut during my upbringing. Morning coffee is a requirement to start the day. Standard drip coffee with cream and sugar, which I often receive the comment if I would like some coffee to go with my cream. My favorite coffee treat is a double shot cappuccino. I also have a coffee curfew which is no coffee past 3 pm (or is it 15 hr).

What makes you laugh a lot?

I have a dry, childish sense of humor. I enjoy comedy movies and TV shows. “News Bloopers” on You Tube will get my attention. I am having a good day when my sense of humor shows itself.

Do you have any hidden skills nobody expects you to have?

Turning my backyard into a little paradise for the children with a zip line, tree house, garden and more to come.

If you could be any fictional character for a week, who would it be and what adventures would you have?

Detective Benoit Blanc from the Knives Out movie series. I found this character to be very clever and he has quite the approach to understanding people and situations. I often feel like a detective when reconciling the trading P&L to the accounting P&L. So being a fictional detective for a week would be a welcomed adventure.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received, and who gave it to you?

Best advice was from the manager of the cocoa desk at Noble Group which was “What is the right answer”. This simple comment was made in relation to an accounting matter that I was explaining to commercial management in a clumsy manner. The advice was translated to keep it simple, “crisp” and understand your audience.
